Perineal Repair Intensive for Midwives

Click here for upcoming workshop dates & registration.
Overview:

This virtual workshop builds on core competencies for suturing, knot-tying, and repair of birth lacerations, and provides an opportunity to expand and refine your skills. This course is generally held on the 3rd Friday of the month, 9am - 4pm Eastern (check calendar for specific dates).  Education and simulation are combined so that everyone learns by doing. If you are a student, please take the Student Perineal Repair workshop.

This program provides (9) CE hours. As part of this workshop participants will receive a suturing model, suturing instruments, and suture. Also included with registration is access to instructional videos prior to and for 3 months after the workshop, and simulation and mentoring on the scheduled workshop dates.

Workshop Registration:
Workshop registration is on Eventbrite. Click here for upcoming workshop dates & registration.
Registration closes two weeks before event begins to allow time for supplies to arrive.

There is 1 Pay-What-You-Can-Ticket for each workshop to prevent finances from being a barrier to attending. Participants self-select this ticket, based on their assessment of their financial situation. Please pay according to your budget. Value of materials is $60. In determining what to pay for a Pay-What-You-Can-Ticket ticket, consider your own financial situation as well as acknowledging the value of materials and the services of your midwife educator. Just as I will encourage you not to undervalue your own midwifery skills in practice, so too I encourage you to recognize the value and the opportunity we offer that supports midwives while we earn a living.

What you'll need for the workshop:
-The Zoom app. Students show me their actions during the simulation. We send the Zoom link shortly before the workshop.
-A quiet room with a fairly large table to work on
-A computer with built in or separate webcam and mic
-A cut of meat for the tissue model: The best cuts of meat are a beef pot roast that is square in shape (i.e bulky, not flat) or a turkey breast. Beef tongue is what I usually use; I get them from a butcher shop, and they are often not available in the grocery store. I don’t recommend chicken as it’s too tender. You can also use pork tenderloin, but again it’s very soft.
-A disposable scalpel or sharp knife to make the lacerations
-Chux, gloves, tape (you will want to secure your foam & fabric model so it doesn’t slip).

We’ll make the models together, so everyone has the support they need. Click here to access the Resource Pages: Suturing Resource Page; Perineal Repair Resource Page. The better prepared you are for the workshop the more you will be able to get out of it. Feel free to make a list of questions in advance of the workshop.
